St. Bart’s Oldtimers Men’s Softball Playoff Results

The march to Labor Day has begun! Eight teams vie for a coveted spot in the championship game on Labor Day at Brookside Park. First round games in this double elimination tournament were played on 8/19.

#1 St. Francis        9

#8 St. Wolfgang    3

Top seed St. Francis scored five runs in the third inning and cruised to an easy victory over St. Wolfgang at Brookside Park. Wolfgang was ready to pounce in the first inning, but Frannies’ Joe LoBrace and Chris “Roc” Sarna made excellent relay throws to gun down a Wolfgang player at the plate, setting the tone for the game. Lefty Mike “Koz” Kozlowski was stellar on the mound for Francis, scattering 13 hits and three runs over seven innings. Fran’s offense was led by “former Mush” Tony Perconte, Tom Ulichny, Sarna, Gus Alvarez, and captain Ben LoBrace, who each collected multiple hits or RBIs. Bill Aumenta, Nash Warfield, Vinny Fumero, and Joe Ursino all managed multiple hits for St. Wolfgang.

#4 St. Sebastian    13

#5 St. Ignatius        7

After St. Sebastian jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, the game was tied at seven in the bottom of the sixth when Sebastian rallied for six runs to seal the victory. Rookie Ron Skwirut (3-3, 4RBI), Billy Mellone (3-3, 2RBI), and Ricky Cintron provided clutch RBIs in the sixth inning rally. Stan “the MAN” Lesniewski scorched a clutch two run double an inning earlier to contribute to Sebastian’s effort. St. Ignatius captain/pitcher Bob McGuiness was sharp on the mound, limiting the powerful Sebas offense to a handful of extra base hits, while contributing to his cause by going 4-4 at the plate. Ross Alpert (3-3, HR), Ara Movsesian, Mike Cunningham, and Bill “the Pirate” Scheiner also racked up multiple hits for St Ignatius.

#3 St. Joseph        5

#6 St. George        9

St. Joseph fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 9-5 loss to St. George on Friday. The Georgie Boys put up nine runs in the first three innings and pitcher Lewis Blau took over from there. Blau limited the Joey’s to one run over the final five innings to seal the victory. Rob Zerafa, Blau, Vru Baboomian, and Frankie Vecchione all managed multiple hits for St George, while “Commish” Jim Kileen, Jim “Tailgate Pro” Sosinski, and John DeLuca each contributed with clutch RBIs. Mike Kelly, Tom Fazio, and Chris Paterek each managed multiple hits for St. Joseph.

#2 St. Anthony    2

#7 St. Vincent        9

St. Vincent’s pitcher Harold “Hop” Hopler was in playoff form, as he surrendered just two runs on nine hits over seven innings. Vincent scored five runs in the first two innings. The offensive onslaught was led by Dan Roy, Russ Voorhees, rookie Ian Mehok, and Nate “Just Great!” Mangiris, all driving in runs in the early innings. Rich Pitonzo, Daryl Palmieri, Roy, and Keith Karyczak all collected multiple hits for St Vincent. Dan Roy finished the season as the top slugger in St. Bart’s, with a 2.097 OPS. Jack Kennedy and Mike D’Amato collected multiple hits for St. Anthony, while captain Bobby Camisa chipped in with an RBI single.

#1 St. Francis earned a spot in the championship game on Labor Day. St. George, St. Joseph, and St. Vincent battle it out in the consolation bracket for a chance to square off against St. Fran.

#1 St. Francis        9

#6 St. George        1

Lefty Mike “Koz” Kozlowski was in top form on the mound for St. Francis, scattering 5 hits and one run over seven innings at Brookside Park on Friday. The Franny’s offense banged out 17 hits for the game, led by Gus Alvarez and Tom Ulichny who collected three hits apiece. Shawn Yaney, Rick Wustefeld, and Kozlowski chipped in with two hits each for St. Francis. Rob Zerafa legged out triple and Vru Baboomian was perfect at the plate for an otherwise hapless Georgie offense. All is not lost for St. George, as they move to the consolation bracket, one victory away from a Labor Day appearance. Should they win on Labor Day, St. Fran will cap off its “worst to first” season with a championship after winning just two games last year.

#3 St. Joseph        11

#4 St. Sebastian    3

St. Joseph sailed to an easy victory over St. Sebastian on Friday at Jerseyland Park. Gary Leichtling was a bulldog on the mound for St. Joseph. Leichtling limited the powerful Sebastian lineup to ten hits, while helping his own cause with a multi-hit game. The Joeys racked up 15 hits with multiple hits collected by Walt Patrylo (3-3), Chris “best outfielder?” Millar, Dave Eckert, Tom Fazio, Dave Merkel. Roger Billotto went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead St Sebastian in hits. With the victory, the Joeys continue the long slog through the consolation bracket, while Sebastian is sent packing for the season.

#7 St. Vincent        13

#5 St. Ignatius        9

Friday's game against St Vincent was a heartbreaker for St Ignatius, as they lost the lead late in a 13-9 defeat. St. Iggy’s Josh Baik slugged a three-run homer in the fourth to give Iggy a 7-5 lead, but Vincent responded with the seven-run onslaught in the fifth to secure the victory. St. Vincent outhit St. Iggy 31-18 for the game. Harold “Hop” Hopler (4-4, 5RBI), Captain Keith Karyczak, Dan Roy, Rei Santiago, Frank Samuelian, and Liam Nobile paced the St. Vincent offense. Bob “CheezeWiz” Cihanowyz, Ara Movsesian, Robby Stratton, Mike Sutterlin, Brian Stitt, and Baik each racked up multiple hits for St Ignatius. St. Vincent will square off against St. Joe in the next elimination game.

#2 St. Anthony    10

#3 St. Joseph        17

These two highly ranked teams were knocked out of the winner’s bracket and squared off in an elimination game on Wednesday at Farley Park. St. Ant watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a loss to St. Joseph. St. Joseph racked up 25 hits for the game led by Chris Millar with a HR and pair of doubles. Dave Eckert, Walt Patrylo, Dan Brown, Karl Grossman, Dave Merkel, James Devlin, Gerry Russo, and Tom Swales each contributed with multiple hits for the Joeys.  Jack Kennedy and Andrew Smyth smacked home runs and collected multiple hits for St. Ant while Erik “Nails” Hastrup, Todd Feinberg, and Luis Fraguas contributed with multi hit games.
