Playoffs begin on 8/19. St. Francis has all but locked up the #1 seed, while Wolfgang looks to make a run as this year’s Cinderella. The rest of the teams will be jockeying for position in “moving” week.
St. Anthony 8
St. Joseph 4
The ageless Frank Chupko turned in another stellar performance on the mound to lead St. Ant past the Joeys on Tuesday at Forest Road Park. St. Anthony pulled away with six runs in the third inning with key hits delivered by Jack Kennedy, Andrew Smyth, Erik “Nails” Hastrup, and Todd Feinberg. Smyth slugged a HR in the fifth inning to add an insurance run for St. Ant. St. Joe’s offense was paced by James Devlin, Dave “Beach Body” Eckert, Dave Merkel, and Dan “keep it in front” Brown. Despite going 0-3 for the week, St. Joe closed out the week in winning fashion, as Dave Merkel produced a first-class food spread on Friday evening.
St. Francis 13 St. Francis 13
St. Wolfgang 6 St. Wolfgang 1
St. Francis easily handled an undermanned St. Wolfgang squad in a doubleheader at Brookside Park on Thursday. Mike “Koz” Kozlowski was a bulldog on the mound in both games for St. Francis. Frannies received contributions from its entire lineup, including extra base hits from Tony “Low Rider” Perconte, Gus Alvarez, Chris “Roc” Sarna, and Charlie “Huggy” Baier.
The Wolfies’ offense was led by Jimmy Barba, Nash “Let’s Go Mets!” Warfield, Joe Ursino, Coady “Code Red” Brown, and Kevin Caggiano, who all collected multiple hits. The “LoBro” brothers have St. Francis firing on all cylinders. Co-captains Ben and Joe LoBrace lead a group of talented league veterans who should make a run deep run in the playoffs.
St. Ignatius 8 St. Sebastian 10
St. Sebastian 6 St. Ignatius 6
Captain Bob McGuiness was in top form on the mound for St. Iggy as they took the first game of the twin bill against St. Sebastian. Donnie “Softball” Rinaldo provided the offensive juice as he slugged a two run double over the head of a hapless Sebas player. Josh Baik and Pete Chemidlin chipped in with key hits for St. Iggy. Sebastian clawed back behind the hitting of Billy Mellone, Ron Skwirut and Matt Taylor, but Iggy held on for the “W”. In the nightcap, Iggy was leading 6-5, but Sebastian received timely hitting from Stan Lesniewski, Matt Taylor, Mike McKenna to pull away for the victory. Play of the night (season?) goes to Sebastian’s John “Greenie” Greenblatt who robbed a HR when he laid out for a catch at the fence in the thick Farley Ivy.
St. Vincent 7
St. Joseph 3
St. Vincent jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning, turned to their ace pitcher Harold “Hop” Hopler, and never looked back. Rich Reich, Hopler, Rei Santiago, and Frank Samuelian all managed multiple hits for St. Vinny. Chris Millar, Walt Patrylo, James Devlin, Gary Leichtling, and Tom Fazio each racked up multiple hits for St Joseph. Don’t sleep on Vincent, who are on a 3-game win streak! Top notch pitching, along with speedy outfielders bodes well for a team in the playoffs.
